Fordite Jewellery FAQ

What is Fordite?

Fordite, sometimes called "Detroit Agate" or "Motor Agate", is made from layers of hardened automotive paint that built up in vehicle paint booths during the early days of car manufacturing. Once removed and polished, the colourful layers reveal unique patterns unlike any natural stone.

Is Fordite a real gemstone?

Fordite is not a natural gemstone or mineral. It is a genuine vintage industrial material that has become highly collectable because of its history, rarity and striking appearance.

Why is Fordite so colourful?

The vibrant colours come from hundreds of layers of automotive paint that were sprayed onto cars over many years. Each layer was baked hard before the next was applied, creating the distinctive striped patterns seen when the material is cut and polished.

Is every piece of Fordite jewellery unique?

Yes. No two pieces of Fordite are ever exactly alike. The colour combinations and patterns vary depending on the paint layers, making every item one of a kind.

Is Fordite rare?

Yes. Traditional Fordite is becoming increasingly rare because modern car factories use advanced painting techniques that no longer create thick paint build-ups. Supplies are limited and cannot be replaced once used.

Where does your Fordite come from?

Our Fordite comes from genuine vintage automotive paint deposits recovered from historic vehicle production facilities. Each piece is carefully selected for its colour, pattern and quality before being crafted into jewellery.

Can I wear Fordite jewellery every day?

Yes. Fordite is suitable for everyday wear when treated with normal care. As with any jewellery, it is best to avoid hard impacts and remove it during activities where it could be scratched or damaged.

How should I care for my Fordite jewellery?

Clean your jewellery gently using a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners and prolonged exposure to excessive heat. Store it separately from harder gemstones to help prevent scratches.

Is Fordite jewellery a good gift?

Fordite makes an excellent gift for car enthusiasts, automotive engineers, classic car owners, collectors and anyone who appreciates unusual jewellery with an interesting story.

Does my Fordite jewellery come with a certificate?

Yes. Every piece is supplied with a signed Certificate of Authenticity together with presentation packaging, making it ideal for gifting or collecting.
